External vs internal gears

An external gear is one with the teeth formed on the outer surface of a cylinder or cone. Conversely, an internal gear is one with the teeth formed on the inner surface of a cylinder or cone. For bevel gears , an internal gear is one with the pitch angle exceeding 90 degrees. Internal gears do not cause output shaft direction reversal

Calculating offsets in piping...........

Most of the offsets used in piping runs are made with 45,60, 11 and 1/4 degrees  respectively  T = S x  table value T= travel  S= set, table  value( for 45 degree =1.414. for 60 degree =1.155 and for 11 and 1/4 =5.125)

PHYSICS OF SEAM BOWLING

Seam bowling   is a phrase used for a   bowling   technique in   cricket   whereby the ball is deliberately bowled on to its seam, to cause a random deviation. Practitioners are known as   seam   bowlers   or   seamers . Seam bowling is generally classed as a subtype of   fast bowling , although the bowling speeds at which seam can be a factor include medium-pace bowling. Although there are specialist seamers that make deliberate use of   Off cutter   and   Leg cutter   at the expense of bowling slower than regular fast bowlers, most bowlers employ the seam to some effect and so the terms "seamer" and "fast bowler" are largely synonymous. A   cricket ball   is not a perfect   sphere . The seam of the ball is the circular stitching which joins the two halves of the cricket ball. Hence, the seam joining the pieces of leather is circumferential and the stitching is noticeably raised. If the ball is bo...

Scope and Limitations of Utilisation of Non-edible Vegetable Oils as a Substitute Fuel for Diesel Engines

For India, there is a need to take a mission approach to explore the possibility of using straight  unmodified vegetable oils/ their blends with mineral diesel as alternative fuel in order to reduce the pollution and to increase the energy security of the country, especially in rural areas. This aimed at exploring technical feasibility of using straight vegetable oils (Jatropha and Karanja) in direct injection compression ignition engine without major hardware modifications. Since use of unprocessed straight vegetable oils has its own merits, it was decided to examine two most commonly available oils (in unmodified form) in an unmodified constant-speed direct-injection diesel engine typically used in the agricultural sector in India. Study was carried out in two phases for (i) Straight vegetable oils and their higher blend, and (ii) lower blends of vegetable oils. This project is carried out at Engine Research Laboratory, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur..........................

Various Types Of CRANES

Image
A crane is a tower or derrick that is equipped with cables and pulleys that are used to lift and lower material. They are commonly used in the construction industry and in the manufacturing of heavy equipment. Cranes for construction are normally temporary structures  either fixed to the ground or mounted on a purpose built vehicle. They can either be controlled from an operator in a cab that travels along with the crane, by a push button pendant control station, or by radio type controls. The crane operator is ultimately responsible for the safety of the crews and the crane. Mobile Cranes The most basic type of crane consists of a steel truss or telescopic boom mounted on a mobile platform, which could be a rail, wheeled, or even on a cat truck. The boom is hinged at the bottom and can be either raised or lowered by cables or hydraulic cylinders. Telescopic Crane This type of crane offers a boom that consists of a number of tubes fitted ...

Nomogram.an Aalignment chart

Image
A  nomogram , also called a  nomograph ,  alignment chart  or  abaque , is a graphical calculating device, a two-dimensional diagram designed to allow the approximate graphical computation of a function. The field of nomography was invented in 1884 by the French engineer Philbert Maurice d’Ocagne (1862-1938) and used extensively for many years to provide engineers with fast graphical calculations of complicated formulas to a practical precision. Nomograms use a parallel  coordinate system  invented by d'Ocagne rather than standard  Cartesian coordinates . A nomogram consists of a set of n scales, one for each variable in an equation. Knowing the values of n-1 variables, the value of the unknown variable can be found, or by fixing the values of some variables, the relationship between the unfixed ones can be studied. The result is obtained by laying a straightedge across the known values on the scales and reading the unknown value from whe...

Footprint of ‘God particle’ found?Indian contribution........

Latest findings in the search for the Higgs boson, the elusive particle is on everyone’s mind. This kind of fame is relatively rare, even for important scientific discoveries; but the Higgs boson has been called, or miscalled, the God particle, enabling it to pass into the realm of popular scientific lore, like the discovery of the smallpox vaccine, the structure of DNA, or the theory of relativity. It would be difficult for most people to understand its significance, just as it would be to comprehend the notion of relativity, but such problems are overcome by locating science in personalities as well as cultural and national traditions. The first thing that you and I know about the Higgs boson is that it’s named after Peter Higgs, a physicist at Edinburgh University who made the discovery — although the original insight, in one of those recurrent back stories of science, was Philip Anderson’s. Still, we have Higgs, and Edinburgh, and western civilisation to fall ...
